Depression

Each year, roughly 6% of the Australian adult population is affected by depression. Depression is a clinically diagnosed medical condition, that can change the way you think and feel about things, keeping your mood and motivation low. Often associated with other symptoms, both physical and psychological, depression can have a negative impact on how you manage your day-to-day life.

Symptoms

  • Feelings of sadness

  • Sleep pattern disturbances

  • Lack of motivation or interest

  • Feeling guilty or worthless

  • Appetite and weight changes

  • Low libido

Causes

There are many internal and external causes that can begin the onset of depression which include, but aren’t limited to:

  • Loss or stress

  • Coupled with another illness such as bi-polar

  • Chemical imbalances

  • Children and teenagers can also become affected only depression, which can present very differently at times to an adult.

Treatment

Pro-active and correct treatment can help relieve symptoms for those suffering, which can include a variety of treatments such as medication and therapy.

  • Therapy:
    Your doctor or other mental health professional can discuss your symptoms, helping you to find ways of managing them and learning to cope.

  • Community Support:
    There are many programs available to assist those with depression and that are affected greatly by their symptoms. Assistance with living arrangements, employment, education, rehabilitation and other support services can be provided by the right type of group.

  • Medication
    There are medications that can be prescribed to assist you with chemical imbalances and helping to alleviate the symptoms.
